As much as you loved your last vacation filled with exploring history and museums, we at Quam Properties can bet that it wasn’t your teenager’s idea of a dream vacation. Even the most studious of youth deserve a getaway filled with fun, outdoor activities, and beach days that never end. When you choose Hawaii for your next vacation, our list of top five Maui teenager activities will ensure that it is a dream getaway for all members of your family.
Learn to Surf in South Maui
First up on our list of Maui teenagers’ activities is surfing. Surfing is an activity that more authentically represents our island home than just about anything else, and teens often excel at the sport. It can be frustrating as adults to see how easily our children learn new skills, but it also makes us very proud.
There are quite a few surf schools in the area, including Goofy Foot Surf School. They are Maui’s longest-running surf school, having taught countless people for over 30 years.

Learn Ukulele or Hula at a Community Cultural Center
Who doesn’t remember the soulful sounds of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” played by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole? That song hit the airwaves in 1993 and brought new attention to the ukulele. Today, over 30 years later, your children have probably witnessed the “Jimi Hendrix of Ukelele” performing on YouTube. This popularity makes learning the ukulele a popular thing to do on Maui, Hawaii, and it can be learned at the Hawaiian Cultural Center at the Royal Lahaina Resort. They also teach hula, something you will get some pointers in if you attend a luau, and we can promise your teenager will love both.
Bike the Wailea Coastal Path End to End
Because of our gorgeous weather, biking is one of the most popular Maui activities for teenagers, and the Wailea Coastal Path offers them the chance to go it alone for a bit. Only 1.5 miles in length (3 miles round-trip), the path will take your teen through some of the most breathtaking land and seascape on the island. Fully paved and offering very little elevation gain, there is one caveat we must warn you about. Your teen can only bike it from end to end in the early morning hours (before 8 or 9 AM), so if they are late risers, you may want to suggest some other Maui outdoor activities.
Watch the Pros at Hoʻokipa Beach Park
Sometimes getting our teens to try new activities can be a bit difficult, and if that is the case with yours, the simplest way to change that is to take them to watch the pros at Hoʻokipa Beach Park. This spot is where the professional surfers and windsurfers practice their sport, and their talent and skill will convince your offspring that learning to surf (or windsurf) will definitely be their favorite thing to do on Maui, Hawaii. Visitors can watch the pros in the winter months from spots such as Hoʻokipa Lookout or from the beach. Staying out of the water is advised, as the waters are rough and can be dangerous for those not accustomed to the sea’s power.
Drop In at Kalama Park Skate Park
The Kalama Park Skate Park is proof that your teenager wasn’t wrong to insist on bringing his board, and it’s also one of the top activities for teens on Maui. The facility is 20,000 feet in size, offering a concrete bowl and a transitional street course with banks, quarter-pipes, roll-ins, and spines. It also has vert and mini-ramps, including a 9-foot-tall vert ramp that connects to a 24-foot mini ramp. (If you don’t know what any of that means, don’t worry, your teen does!)
This park is meant for skateboarders, inline skaters, and BMX bikers, although we doubt you lugged your bikes along on your travels. If Mom doesn’t feel comfortable dropping off her “baby,” there is a 36-acre park that surrounds the area and includes public restrooms and beach access.
