Maui is home to over 30 miles of beaches. With that many options to choose from, it’s unlikely you’ll get to explore them all, so be sure to choose beaches that are well suited to how you hope to spend your day. Whether you’re hoping to catch some rays, lounge under a palm, surf, snorkel, or one of the many other water activities available on Maui, there is a beach that will be the perfect fit.
With Maui’s vibrant marine life presence, snorkeling can be an exciting experience. Descend into the underwater world to swim alongside bright tropical fish and green sea turtles. There are many beaches that offer good snorkeling conditions, with Ulua Beach among them.
Fronting the Wailea Resort lies a strip of soft golden sand known as Ulua Beach. It is even named after a fish, with the word Ulua meaning adult crevalle fish in the Hawaiian language. On calm days, snorkeling is excellent around the rocky point located along the north end of the beach. Arriving in the morning gives you a better chance of finding a parking spot and calmer water conditions before the wind picks up. This is also a popular dive spot for introductory scuba lessons.
Planning Your Beach Outing
Ulua Beach Park is located approximately 15 minutes south of downtown Kihei in the town of Wailea. It is situated along the front of the Wailea Elua Village condos. Beach facilities include bathrooms and showers. Swim with extra caution, as there are no lifeguards on duty at this beach. Get there early to snag a parking spot, as the lot tends to fill up early. If the lot is full, parking at Keawakapu Beach and walking across Mokapu Beach is also an option, as the three are connected.
