Hawaii is famous for its waterfalls, and when you visit the island of Maui taking in a waterfall or two is a requirement. You could drive around and try to see them from a car window, but you could also go on the internet and watch videos. You want an up close and unique waterfall experience. Why not head over to Haleakala State Park and take a hike on the Pipiwai Trail which runs right along the Oheo stream. The hike offers spectacular views of a series of waterfalls.
The Pipiwai Trail
Pipiwai Trail begins at the base of the stream and follows it uphill for two miles. The journey starts as you walk by a gently flowing pool of water. You will then pass the beautiful Makahiku waterfall. Soon you will find yourself deep in a bamboo forest where you will hear the comforting sounds of bamboos shoots crashing together. When the bamboo forest ends, you will emerge at the base of the fabulous Waimoku Waterfall which sits above the Seven Sacred Pools. When you look straight up you will see that the water is falling straight down from an impressive height of 400 feet. People love the sound of the water falling into the pools and you will notice that there are far more than seven of them.
The Pipiwai Trail in Maui is partially paved and partially comprised of dirt and rocks. The hike is very popular with tourists, so you will never walk alone. Although the hike itself is not that hard, the area has been known to get some flash flooding and there are occasionally falling rocks. As with any hike it is important to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Be sure to also adhere to the park ranger’s advice.
