Maui is known for its stunning white sand beaches, and Makena Beach falls near the top of the list. With an undeveloped coastline, plenty of room to spread out, and fabulous views of the offshore Molokini Crater, Makena Beach State Park is a gem that shouldn’t be missed.
A Day at Makena Beach State Park
Take a break from the resort-lined beaches and head to windswept Makena Beach State Park. Also known as Big Beach and Oneloa Beach, this is a must-see beach located south of Kihei. Makena Beach offers plenty of room to roam, measuring at over a half mile long. Though it can see crowds on weekends, if you’re willing to walk further down from the popular access points, you can usually find a spot to claim as your own. You will fare even better at staking your own private claim in the sand with a weekday visit.
Makena Beach offers clear blue waters and stunning views of Molokini Crater, a popular snorkeling destination. Makena is an unprotected beach and can see strong currents and a fierce shorebreak, particularly when there is a large south swell. When the water is calm, this can be a good swimming spot, although caution should always be taken. Even when conditions prevent casual swimming, Makena can be a great spot to watch local boogie boarders in action, take in the beautiful scenery, and watch for sea turtles swimming offshore.
Planning Your Beach Outing
Makena Beach is also known as Oneloa Beach or Big Beach. It is located approximately 11 miles south of downtown Kihei along Makena Alanui Road. There are multiple entrances and parking lots and a handful of food trucks in the area, including Jawz Tacos. Beach facilities include a restroom, picnic tables, and three lifeguard towers.
