History
The gallery’s namesake, Curtis Wilson Cost, was born in Palos Verdes, California in 1953. He is the son of artist James Cost. After his parent’s divorced, the 13-year-old artist and his mother and siblings moved to Hawaii, where he would spend his teen years. After marrying and briefly retuning to California, the artist came back to Hawaii and opened his gallery in 1984. He has been painting and showing his depictions of Maui landscapes ever since. His gallery is the oldest one-man gallery on the island.
The Paintings
Mr. Cost’s most famous paintings include “Hanamu Dusk,” which depicts the large eucalyptus trees along the west side of Makawoa, and “Heart’s Desire,” an oil painting which depicts a small farmhouse sitting on a lush green Hawaiian farm with many different shades of green.
The paintings are so exact that they look almost like photographs. They make the perfect souvenir of a Maui vacation or the perfect gift to take back to that favorite friend at home. The gallery will also frame your painting for you in one of their high end and beautiful frames. The gallery is open every day from 2 pm to 5 pm. The Curtis Wilson Cost Gallery is located downstairs of the Kula Lodge Restaurant, which serves some great Hawaiian food and locally-sourced libations.
