If you’ve never been to Hawaii before, you may not know all the things you need for a successful trip. Our goal is to make your vacation a dream come true, so we have created this guide on what to pack for Maui.
What to Pack if You’re Renting a Condo vs. a Resort
There may be differences in what to bring to Maui if you are staying in one of our resort retreats versus a condo, but generally, those differences will be negligible. Resort living may mean that all your beach essentials are included with your rental (beach chairs, umbrellas, etc.). Condos, on the other hand, may not always provide those, so be sure to read the amenity section in the listing. Everything will be clearly listed, so you can plan accordingly.
What Locals Actually Wish Tourists Packed (Or Left At Home)
Hawaiians are an easygoing bunch, but there are some things we wish you would bring or, conversely, leave behind. When you are planning what to pack for Maui, it is advisable to bring your own reusable shopping bags, as plastic bags are illegal. As for what to leave at home? Expensive jewelry, fancy clothes, and any warm clothing are just not needed in paradise.
What You Can’t Take to Maui
As we are talking about what to bring to Maui, it’s only fair to discuss what you CAN’T bring to Maui. That list is relatively small, but please note that you can’t bring fruits, vegetables, plants, or untreated seeds, as our biosecurity laws are strict. And you might want to wait until you get to Maui to buy sunscreen, as Hawaii has banned (it’s now state law) sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate.
The Best Packing List
Knowing what to pack for a week in Maui is easy; just print this list and mark items off as you add them to your suitcase:
- Lightweight, breathable clothing
- Flip flops and walking shoes
- Sun protection (hats and sunglasses, you can purchase sunscreen here)
- Multiple swimsuits
- Your favorite toiletries
- Camera (or your phone will work)
- Beach gear (if not included as an amenity)
