It feels as if everything is getting more and more expensive, but you still want to do all the things, including taking a Maui vacation. You work hard, and you deserve the break, and we at Quam Properties believe that you CAN vacation inexpensively, even in Hawaii. This guide to the top 5 free things to do on Maui will offer examples that are fun and exciting.

Maui Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank

We know that we do have a higher cost of living here, but trust us. We have lived on Maui for many years, and we have learned that living, or vacationing, here doesn’t have to break the bank. There are many free things to do and places to visit in Maui, giving your budget a break. Our Maui budget rentals are spacious, comfortable, and reasonably priced, helping you save even more money.

The Best Free Experiences Waiting For You

Now it’s time to put our money where our mouths are, so to speak. The best free things to do on Maui are listed below.

Watch the Sunrise from Haleakalā

This first free thing to do on Maui does require rising early, but we promise it is worth the lack of sleep. Haleakalā, an active shield volcano, offers the most breathtaking views of the sunrise. You will have to factor in the 20-mile drive up to the Haleakalā Crater on winding roads. But as you sit there, watching the dark skies lighten, and the fire of the sun begins to reveal the beauty of the countryside around you, you’ll know. This activity didn’t cost you a dime but is worth a fortune to your soul.

Visit Lahaina Town

You may have been watching the news a few years ago when the fires devastated parts of Hawaii, including Lahaina Town. It was heartbreaking to watch, especially as the town has always been known as the cultural heart of West Maui. Offering history, tradition, and ocean adventures, the fires knocked our feet out from under us, but we are Hawaiian strong, and we are rebuilding.

When you visit our stubborn little town, know that every dollar you spend on Front Street will make you an active participant in our rebirth. And yes, we know this is a list of free things to do on Maui, so if you visit and don’t spend a penny, your support will still be felt and greatly appreciated!

Go for a Drive to Road to Hana

Going for a drive has always been parents’ sneaky way of getting out of the house without spending money, but we can promise no one will be bored on the Road to Hana. Offering peeks into historic towns, including Pāʻia at the start of the drive and Hāna at the end, your road trip will provide an authentic glimpse into the traditions and history of Maui. There are also waterfalls (Twin Falls at Mile Marker 2 and Wailua Falls at Mile Marker 45), a bamboo forest, and Paʻiloa Beach, a unique black sand beach. None of which will cost you a single penny to enjoy.

Snorkel at Honolua Bay

Honolua Bay isn’t just one of the best places to visit in Maui for free; it is also one of the best snorkeling and scuba diving spots on the island. The bay is part of the Mokulēʻia Marine Life Conservation District, meaning the waters and everything that lives in them are protected. Offering clear water, colorful coral reefs, shiny and colorful fish, and even a few sea turtles, your adventures in snorkeling will be memorable and free.

Catch a Sunset at Kapalua Bay Beach

You started your day of free things to do on Maui watching the sunrise from Haleakalā, and your day wouldn’t be complete without ending your day with a sunset at Kapalua Bay Beach. The waters here are also great for snorkeling, but we want to talk about the magic of the sunset. Sitting on the beach, listening to the waters quietly crashing against the sandy shore, with your eyes focused on the fire in the sky, is one of life’s greatest and most breathtaking experiences. And again, it won’t cost you a thing.

Free Outdoor Adventures Worth Every Step

Spoiler alert: We weren’t satisfied with offering just 5 things to do in Maui for free. We had to add 2 more, because less is never more in our world!

Hiking the Twin Falls Trail

We did mention Twin Falls earlier, so you may remember it is something you can do on the Road to Hana. This less than 2-mile out-and-back hike takes hikers through some of the world’s most lush landscapes and offers views of the falls at its halfway point. Located at mile marker 2, it will take anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes to complete.

Whale Watching from the Shoreline

January through March is peak whale watching season on Maui, and many travelers are surprised that you don’t have to take a tour to see the humpback whales going about their whaling business. Our own Ka’anapali Beach offers the perfect opportunity for this free thing to do on Maui and is known for being a popular spot for mama whales and their babies to breach the water’s surface.
