Can you really consider you have experienced Hawaii if you don’t attend at least one luau during your stay? Luaus in Maui and across the Hawaiian Islands have been a tradition since ancient times, but the ones offered today first appeared during King Kamehameha II’s reign in 1819. We at Quam Properties want to make sure you enjoy an authentic island experience, shining the spotlight on the best luaus in Maui and the comforts found in our Maui retreats.

Experience the Tradition of a Hawaiian Luau

As already mentioned, the traditional luau has changed over time. Pre-King Kamehameha II (ancient times), a luau was meant to be a time of celebration of victories and harvests. Men and women ate separately, and commoners were not permitted to dine on sacred foods. Post-Kamehameha, men and women were permitted to eat together, and luaus were joyful celebrations.

Fun fact: luau originally referred to a specific dish served at the feast. When air travel made the world a much smaller place, the entire feast came to be called a luau, and the commercial era began. Since the 1950s, commercial luaus in Maui (and across the Hawaiian Islands) have become a vacation tradition for tourists flying in from around the world.

What to Expect at a Maui Luau

You may think you know everything there is to know about what to expect from a luau, having seen them in the movies. But until you are sitting at the table of your luau in Maui, you will never truly understand what a fun and moving experience it will be.

Lei Greetings

Your first experience will be the lei greeting. Smiling people dressed in traditional Hawaiian garb will greet you with a lei made from fresh flowers, shells, or kukui nuts. The men typically get the nut or shell lei, and the women usually get the fresh flowers. As guests make their way to their tables, there are often demonstrations taking place, and talented performers will help you make your own leis, learn to hula, or learn lauhala weaving. This is also when you can order your drinks, and we hope a tropical Mai Tai is what you choose. It is a tradition after all.

Traditional Hawaiian Food

Now it is time to eat! The ceremony starts with the Imu unearthing (yes, that is the pig that has been roasting underground for many hours). The feast will be served buffet-style, featuring traditional Hawaiian dishes such as poi, lomi-lomi salmon, and huli-huli chicken. Desserts are also featured; these will be more traditional sweets, including coconut pudding, pineapple cake, and even shaved ice. Trust us, you will not go hungry during a Maui luau. There is a lot of food!

Live Polynesian Performances

While you eat, it is time for the performances to begin. The live Polynesian performances usually include storytelling, where performers narrate traditional Hawaiian stories, while hula dancing, singing, playing instruments, and, of course, dancing with fire. Remember the hula lessons you briefly learned upon walking in? Some shows will have audience participation, inviting the ladies to join in the hula dancing fun!

Fire Dancing

The entire show is an adventure to remember, but as you might expect, the fire dancing is the biggest wow factor. The fire dancing, often performed with knives, is the climax of the show, and as they dance faster and faster, the fire shooting off flames from knife blades, the energy of the show infects the audience. This is truly one of our favorite parts, and if you can capture a picture, it will be one that everyone comments on!
