Maui is well known for its world-class beaches, and the boundless possibilities here will not disappoint. While some of Maui’s beaches are best for trying out some of the numerous watersports popular around the island, others are best for catching an epic golden sunset or exploring tidepools along the shoreline. Be sure to do your research before you hit the beach so you can find one that will be a perfect fit for you.

While pristine white sand and swaying palms is likely what you had in mind when you envisioned an ideal Maui beach, you won’t want to miss the striking black sand beach at Wai’anapanapa State Park. The waves and current here often make for less than ideal swimming conditions, but there are plenty of sights to see that still make it a worthy stop. If you stop to explore the black sand, you’ll discover that it’s actually more like small pebbles than the island’s fine white sand, but still quite picturesque against the turquoise water. Along the east end of the beach is a scenic sea arch. From the west end of the beach, trails lead out along the cliff, providing several miles of Oceanside exploration. These trails provide a good vantage point for viewing the sea arch, as well as dramatic sprays as waves crash against the rocks. There’s also a blowhole located here, where waves force water up through a natural hole in the lava rocks, sending a plume of water into the air. This is one of the most unique Maui State Parks!

While Wai’anapanapa State Park isn’t suited for swimming or beach lounging, it is absolutely ideal for exploring the beautifully rugged terrain!
