First time visitors to Maui are certain to be a little overwhelmed by their choice of beaches. The island has over 30 miles of sand and surf and deciding which beaches you want to see and which ones you want to skip can be a difficult task. One beach you won’t want to miss is Keawakapu Beach. Keawakapu offers swimming and sunbathing on a stretch of sand that is popular with the locals and tourist alike.

The Landscape

Although the shoreline at Keawakapu Beach in Maui is well developed, the shops and beach homes sit at a good distance from the water, making it feel less crowded than other beaches on Maui. The name Keawakapu means “forbidden cove” in the Hawaiian language, and that may be because the area is not a good place to be when a storm hits, as it is not as protected as other areas of the island.

Activities at Keawakapu Beach in Maui

Swimmers at Keawakapu Beach love the waters here and a lot of them actual swim laps across the length of the beach. The south end of the beach is known as a good place to snorkel. There is a place at the north end of the beach to rent such things as stand up boards and kayaks. A lot of people like to ride bikes along the shore and the sands are also very popular with runners. The openness of the beach makes it a great place to watch the sunset.

The Car Reef
