You have come to Maui to experience some outdoor adventures that you would not find anywhere else. You already have plans for snorkeling and zip lining, but you are still looking for a good hike. Haleakala National Park is located in a massive crater that takes up 75% of the island of Maui. It offers everything from rainforest to truly unique and barren landscapes, as well as some challenging hiking. With a peak of 10,023 feet, it is known as a great place to see the stars at night. It is also known for its beautiful sunrises and sunsets and for its distinctive and haunting silence.

History

The crater was originally called Hawaii National Park and was one of the first national parks named when the National Park Service was created in 1916. The park is now independent and has been ever since 1961. The area is popular with native Hawaiians and many people still come to the area to practice hula and make sacrificial offerings.
